Henley Royal Regatta has featured on the big screen recently in David Fincher’s latest Hollywood blockbuster, ‘The Social Network’ which was released in the UK on 15th October.
Columbia Pictures, makers of the film, staged a re-enactment of the victory by the Dutch Crew, Hollandia Roeiclub, over Harvard University in the Final of The Grand Challenge Cup in 2004. The Grand Challenge Cup is the Regatta’s main event for men’s eights.
The film features identical twin brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who rowed for Harvard University and claim that they were the original founders of Facebook. The brothers, who were in Henley during the filming at the Regatta, fought a multi-million dollar court battle with their erstwhile colleague Mark Zuckerberg to prove it.
The 2010 Regatta literally bristled with Hollywood-style cameras and personnel on the final day to capture the moment. Unlike the participants of the time, the movie “extras” got four chances to get it right on the water.
